Strawberry Fest ends Saturday festivities early after shots fired nearby

The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival ended its Saturday festivities early after a series of gunshots sounded nearby.Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Jimmy Travis confirmed late Saturday that the shots were fired outside the perimeter of the festival grounds.The Ponchatoula Police Department is continuing the investigation.The festival typically draws between 300,000 and 500,000 people to the town of 7,500 residents. This year’s festival marks Ponchatoula’s first since 2019, as COVID-19 canceled plans in 2020 and 2021.Festivities are scheduled to resume Sunday and continue until 6.p.m. that night.
